At The Drake Center, it’s no surprise our families are a bit…furry. From dogs and cats to horses, chickens and an emu, we’d like you to meet the loves of our lives—our pets.

If you had to choose, would you say you are a cat person or a dog person? Why?
I would say I am definitely a cat person. I love dogs and did not like cats in the past, but after owning a cat, I'm hooked!
How did you get your pets? Why did you choose those particular breeds?
Ruby was adopted at the San Diego County animal shelter in Carlsbad. BaoBao was a relinquished puppy mill dog that had all kinds of liver issues. He lived most of his life in the hospital until I took him to his forever home with us. He has been through a lot, but now he is happy and healthy!
What is special about your pets?
My animals are well-behaved and sweet. They have never bitten or scratched a soul! In fact, many people gravitate towards our animals when they come over our house. Also, they are bilingual, which makes them extra special!
What is the cutest thing about your pets, physically?
Ruby has pink and black paw pads. They remind me of little jelly beans! BaoBao has a very handsome face.
What do you let your pets get away with that you probably shouldn't?
I allow Ruby to sleep on our bed, whereas BaoBao is not allowed. However, he does have the whole couch to himself if he pleases.
What is your favorite memory or story about your pets?
This story is particularly about BaoBao's heroism. About two years ago I had a Rottweiler named Bear. She and BaoBao got loose and were wandering the sidewalk around our house. I was not aware these two were loose and received a call from a neighbor. She informed me that my dogs were out and sitting at the end of the sidewalk behind her house. My neighbor’s house is only a couple of yards away, so they weren't wandering off too far. As my neighbor approached my dogs, little BaoBao, weary of strangers, made sure she wasn't going to harm his older sister. My neighbor told me she was more afraid of the little Maltese than the Rottweiler! After walking them back to my house, I felt like a proud mom because of my little BaoBao. Every time I retell that story it makes me smile. Love that little guy!
What do your pets bring to the dynamic of your family?
These two critters are our entertainment and our companions. They definitely bring joy and happiness to our family. We love them very much!
