At The Drake Center, it’s no surprise our families are a bit…furry. From dogs and cats to horses, chickens and an emu, we’d like you to meet the loves of our lives—our pets.
Proud pet parent: Chris, hospital manager
- Chester, English cocker spaniel mix
If you had to choose, would you say you are a cat person or a dog person? Why?
Although I love both dogs and cats, I am more of a dog person because I love that a dog can participate in more of our family adventures.
How did you get your pet? Why did you choose that particular breed?
I adopted Chester through The Drake Center. Dr. Shotwell brought him in when he was barely six weeks old after being rescued from an abusive household. I took one look at him and fell in love. He needed a family that would love him forever and I knew it had to be my family.
Because he had already endured abuse at a young age, he was not well socialized and a bit fearful. Peggy, one of our veterinary technicians, would take him to her house to be with her dogs and eventually he learned how to be in a positive environment with other dogs. We also were very gentle with his handling and taught him he could trust again. His young age and quick intervention allowed him to become the wonderful dog is he is today.
Honestly, I never thought I would have a cocker, but I feel so lucky to have him. He is a loving and sweet boy and so patient with my young children.
What is special about your pet?
Chester is special because he has the best personality. I completely adore that he snorts like a little pig when you snuggle with him and boy, does he like to snuggle! He also loves to come to work with me and get a bath.
What is the cutest thing about your pet, physically?
Chester has the best hair coat. He has long blond tendrils on the top of his head almost as if he is wearing a wig. It is definitely unique and he gets a lot of attention for it.
What do you let your pet get away with that you probably shouldn't?
Chester is pretty sneaky. He likes to bolt out the door at any opportunity and run like crazy around the cul-de-sac. He won’t return until he stops by every house and then he seems content and comes right back. Thank goodness we live in a very dog-friendly neighborhood!
What is your favorite memory or story about your pet?
My favorite memory is the day I brought him home and surprised my children with this beautiful puppy. They were so excited and gentle with him and have done a great job making him feel safe again and welcoming him into our family.
What does your pet bring to the dynamic of your family?
Chester brings love, laughter and chaos to our household and I can’t imagine him not being a part of our family.
