Diamond Pet Foods has voluntarily recalled several brands of dog and cat food due to a multi-state salmonella outbreak. The company has issued several rounds of recalls for food produced at its Gaston, South Carolina plant between December 9 and April 7. According to Food Safety News, the latest recall—which was announced on Friday, May 18—also involves food produced at a Diamond plant in Meta, Missouri.
Recalled brands include Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Kirkland Signature, Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance, Wellness, Canidae, Apex, Country Value, Premium Edge, Professional, 4Health and Solid Gold.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), at least 16 people have been infected but no deaths have been reported. The Public Health Agency of Canada also noted two cases of illness. Humans can contract salmonella by handling the infected food, then not washing their hands before eating or handling their own food.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed two dog illnesses related to the recall as of May 16, according to Food Safety News. In addition, the Calgary Herald reported that two cats in a Montreal shelter died while another became ill after eating Diamond Pet Food products.
