If you’re like most cat owners, you’ve probably experienced the excitement of catnip with your feline friend. Here’s a breakdown of what catnip is all about, why some cats love it while others remain indifferent, and how to best enjoy this herbal delight.

Origin and Nature of Catnip

Catnip, scientifically known as Nepeta cataria, originates from Europe and Asia. Its name "cataria" even stems from the Latin word for cat. This member of the mint family is renowned for its effects on feline behavior, thanks to a compound called nepetalactone.

How Catnip Affects Cats

Nepetalactone is the magic ingredient in catnip that triggers a range of reactions in cats. When cats inhale nepetalactone, it interacts with their brain's receptors and replicates pheromones, which are chemicals that cause all kinds of “feel good” reactions that last roughly 10 minutes. This can lead to behaviors like rolling, rubbing, and general playfulness. Interestingly, ingestion of catnip tends to have a calming effect on cats.

Not All Cats React the Same

Contrary to popular belief, not all cats react to catnip. The response to catnip is hereditary, with approximately one-third of cats lacking the gene that makes them susceptible. Kittens under three months old also typically do not respond to catnip. Age plays a significant role in a cat's reaction to catnip. While kittens might not react until they're older, elderly cats may also show diminished responses. This variability is perfectly normal and doesn’t indicate any health issues. (Source)

Growing Catnip at Home

Catnip is easy to grow at home and can provide your cat with endless entertainment. You might find your cat nibbling on it or rolling around in it. For the most part, it’s a fairly harmless indulgence. However, if your kitty eats a lot of it, it can make him sick, so if you see vomiting, then you'll want to relocate the catnip to a spot that's out of reach; then contact us for an appointment.

Catnip Toys and Their Potency

If you’ve noticed that your cat’s interest in a catnip toy wanes over time, it’s likely because it can lose its potency after a few weeks. That’s most likely why the cat who rubbed all over it initially has lost interest.

Enjoying Catnip Responsibly

Whether your cat loves catnip or remains indifferent, it’s important to offer it in moderation. Monitor your cat's reactions and adjust accordingly to ensure they enjoy the experience without any adverse effects. Catnip is a fun and harmless way to keep your cats entertained. However, if your cat shows no interest, there’s nothing wrong with them either; they probably just lack the gene.
